Everest Base Camp Weather

Everest Base Camp in Nepal is well-renowned trekking trails all across the globe for people who love climbing mountains and love the thrills it holds. Everest Base Camp lies on the elevation of 5,380 meters above the sea level. The trekkers usually fly from Kathmandu to Lukla via domestic airlines and take the trail which starts from Namche Bazaar. The duration of the EBC usually lasts 13-14 days, at the average ratio. It also depends upon the traveling agencies that you are going for the trek to base camp.

The trail to EBC

Most of the trekkers usually take a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu, but hardly some of the adventure-seeking trekkers do it the old way, they start walking to Lukla from Jiri. As soon as you start your, trek up from Lukla you will be surrounded with other tall mountains like Cho Oyu, Nuptse, and Lhotse. Gradually you move on to the Namche Bazaar where you will have a day to rest, shop, visit the museum or simply study book in the closest library and other days the trek again to start the largest monastery in Khumbu call Tengboche Gumba. After some days of the continuous walk you reach Kalapatthar where you will be clearly able to see the tents of the EBC and the great glaciers of Khumbu. This is not the only route to the base camp, there are other trails too, like from Jiri to Everest Base Camp, Tumlingtar to EBC, Gokyo over the Cho La pass and from Lukla to Tengboche. It’s just the distance and time interval that differs otherwise, all the routes lead you the Everest Base Camp.

Difficulties of EBC trek

When we talk about the difficulty of climbing the EBC, the weather is one of the horrifying aspects. As we can’t predict the weather, it can be challenging at the start but gradually after we get adapted to it, we will overcome it to some extents. In the daytime temperature at the lower altitudes is 17 degrees on average and at nights can get up to 2 degrees or lower. And at the higher elevation, it can get up to 25 degrees to the highest and –15 degrees at the lowest.

Weather of EBC

The temperature also differs season wise. From June to August it is summer and the temperature reaches up to 25 degrees Celsius at maximum and will be sunny, at the night time it may lower down to – 20-degree centigrade which is way below the freezing point. If you stayed inside the camp, you won’t feel that much cold. This season is viewed to be off the favor to trek the Mount Everest Base Camp because of the high possibility of frequent downpour and cloudy weather. And, the weather up in the Himalayas is unpredictable.

The best time to go trekking to the Everest Base Camp is before the monsoon starts or after the monsoon ends. You can plan the EBC trek between January and February but gets colder than other seasons at the higher altitudes.
