Trip Introduction

Ghandruk’s sprawlings split -level town is one of the biggest gurung setlements in Nepal.A layover day is well spent roaming its maze of stone -paved paths among handsome slate-roofed houses. The community prosper,as do others in the region from its young men serving in the Gurkha regiments. The Annapurna Conservation headquarters, with a museum and informative staffs ,set on a promontory behind the health post .The site provides an unbeatable photo-op taking in Annapurna South,Hiunchuli,Machapuchre and the steep sided Modi Khola valley leading into the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. Long before trekkers came flocking to the Himalaya Deothal as the Gurungs known it ,was a place of refuge and spiritual renewal ,where nothing should be slaughtered nor meat eaten .Lt.Col jimmy Robert Christened it the”AnnapurnaSanctuary” during his 1956 unsucessful attempt to climb Machapuchhre, itself a sacred summit subsequence closed to expeditions. A natural amphithetre surrounded by eleven peaks over 6,400 meters (21,000 feet), the Sanctuary affords trekkers a spot amidst a panoply of enormous peaks a high usually re-served for mountaineers .Annapurna Base Camp (4,070 meters,13,550 feet) a large snow -covered meadow with several small lodges ,is only a week ‘s walk from Pokhara, through Dhampus and Landruk (also called Landrung) in one direction of Ghandruk and Birethante is the other. Tea houses ,many trimmed with flowers beds, provide some of the highest standard trek lodging in Nepal .The Ghar featurs fresh garden vegetables and hot showers heated by the efficient back –boiler system .In order to save trees ,ACAP regulation prohibit fires in the Sanctuary (Kerosene can be purchased and stoves rented in Chhomrong).Weather is flickle and the Modi valley gorge is susceptible to avalanches and early snow .Non -expedition climber can try out Tharpu Chuli(Tent Peak,5,663 meters,18550 feet) with a Trekking peak permit.
